It is important to be prepared, even even for a short walk. You will need at least six litres of water per day. A snack or meal is a good idea on short walks and when going for longer walks, or overnight it's best to pack something more substantial to keep you sustained.
Be medically prepared with a first aid kit. Don't forget sun cream, insect repellent, spray on bandage, antiseptic, space blanket & antihistamine. It’s also wise to include a small container with a list of your allergies and/or medical requirements and emergency contact numbers.
Most importantly, let someone know your plan so they can alert authorities if you’re overdue.
While most tracks are well-marked, it is a good idea take a topographic map and compass, or a GPS. Check weather conditions before setting out, as some of the roads can become boggy when it rains and there may be fire restrictions in the warmer months.
Strong rips and currents may be present at waterways – take care in the water and please supervise children at all times. A current NSW recreational fishing licence is required when fishing in all waters.
Make sure you wear a hat, sturdy enclosed footwear and take weatherproof clothing, and don't forget your camera & binoculars if you want to bird and whale watch!
