BRUCE MATHISKE – GUITAR VIRTUOSO
TWYFORD HALL MERIMBULA
Saturday 4 September 8pm
Bookings/info at : Phone 1800 043 249 and Magpie Music Bega
online at www.bruceguitar.com
Fiery fretwork, delicate harmonics, notes exploding from both hands to the tenderly caressed all culminating in the rhythmic virtuosity of Guitar Maestro Bruce Mathiskes live concert. Expect an entertaining night of stringed excellence with infectious rhythms from far flung corners of his guitar as well as Mathiskes engaging, humorous persona as he returns in concert to release his new CD.
Bruce Mathiskes long awaited CD/DVD release is his most significant to date. The title “Rhythm Hunter” allows Mathiske to explore different genres whilst retaining album continuity and importantly his own very unique style. Solo Virtuosity pieces such as “Rushin’ Around” sit perfectly alongside the wistful “Water is Wide”. The guitar standard “Classical Gas” has been given a Mathiske twist by injecting a Spanish accent and “My Way”, a guitar and Ukulele duet, has a lively Latin Rhythm. Mathiskes composition skills are on show particularly with “Loco El Gato” & “Formidable Sea”, pieces that were written for five guitars. His simultaneous guitar and Didgeridoo playing is highlighted on the almost Celtic “Best of Australia Theme”, which is the title theme of his music scores for the Australian Geographic “Best of Australia” series. The new release comes with a bonus DVD also title Rhythm Hunter, which takes you on a journey with Bruce and his quest for world rhythms. This highly entertaining travel/music documentary sees Mathiske travel through Morocco and South America.
Bruce's many eclectic & various music influences from his world travels and guitarists from the likes of Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, Jimi Hendrix, Leo Kottke, BB King, Barney Kessell and Al Di Meola have evolved into an exciting style all his own. His albums and concerts are a mix of many rhythms and moods, add to this Didgeridoo and Mathiske surpasses expectations at every turn, audiences are gob smacked at his ability to play bass, rhythm and melody simultaneously.
"A model demonstration of guitar virtuosity and richness of Mathiske's musical palette. Marvel at the speed of his playing on Nashville Express with its hints of country. Be amused at how, with Slipstreaming and Caribbean Daze, he could easily be a member of Jimmy Buffet's band. And, as he wanders around the region, see how effortlessly he embraces smooth Latin sounds with Havana Nights and the richness of Spain and Mexico with El Martes Gracioso. Mathiske is quite simply, a great guitar player.” Bruce Elder - Sydney Morning Herald

LITTLE SHIPMATES: SEAFARING PETS
A travelling exhibition from the Australian National Maritime Museum
Sam Hood chronicled life in the first half of the 20th Century. Born in a seaside suburb of Adelaide, he opened his studio in Pitt Street, Sydney living close to the water in Balmain, New South Wales.
He loved boats and had a successful business selling photographs of ships. The exhibition is a sample of European shipmates and their seafaring pets.

SCULPTURE ON THE EDGE EXHIBITION
Bermagui's "Sculpture on the Edge" Committee is delighted to announce that Professor Philip Cox AO, Director Cox Richardson Architects has offered an acquisitive prize of $5000 for this year's event. Professor Cox has been a supporter of "Sculpture on the Edge" since it's inception in 2007 when he generously allowed the use of his beautiful Murrah property, "Thubbul" for its inaugural symposium "Sculpture as Public Art. " Thubbul " will again be open to the public on Friday March 12th from 9am to 4pm as part of "Sculpture on the Edge" when there will be guided tours of the Cox art collection. Sculpture on the Edge is also delighted to announce that Professor Cox and Janet Hawley have agreed to be patrons, and that Philip will be opening the event.
"Sculpture on the Edge" has grown from a three to a ten day event, running from Friday 5th to Sunday 14th March 2010, and will this year encompass both the Canberra long weekend and the Bermagui Seaside Fair. The annual symposium will be held at "Nerimbah", just outside Bermagui , on Sunday 7th March , the theme being "Sculpture Controversy!" It promises some entertaining speakers & lively discussion. Applications may be made through the web site given below.
During the exhibition large sculptures will be displayed on Endeavour Point Headland & Horseshoe Bay Beach, while small sculptures can be viewed at the Community Hall. Local & regional artists will be well represented by sculptors Daniel Lafferty, Murray Ambler, Gabrielle Powell, Ulan Murray, Karen Charlebois and Alan Watt. There will again be a contingent of students from ANU led by the indefatigable Frank Maconochie. New exhibitors include renowned wood turner Richard Raffan & Wynne Prize finalist Elizabeth Roet from the Blue Mountains.
There will be a Festival Club in the evenings during the time of the exhibition to encourage artists and audience to get together. Details of what's happening will be posted on the website, www.sculpturebermagui.org.au or you can contact Event Manager Jan Ireland on 6493 3808.

25th ANNUAL MALIBU SURFING CONTEST
Merimbula Sailboard Club will be hosting their 24th annual Malibu surfing event on Saturday 22nd May.
The event will be named DOCTOR MALIBU in memory of Peter Hellmrich (Doc) winner of the 1998 Legends.
For the 23rd event, along with a host of locals, Malibu riders came from Warrnambool, Lakes Entrance, Sydney and the south coast to compete in the one day event. Over 70 surfers signed up and they were not disappointed as Merimbula turned it on again for this popular event with head high waves that improved in quality all day, culminating in a fantastic final with three locals and three visitors vying for top honours.
The event is popular with spectators as it is held on Main Beach starting early with heats running all morning and finals all afternoon. The standard of surfing from both locals and visitors is outstanding and the club runs the BBQ from breakfast onwards.
Contestants meet at Main beach at 7am for the first heats which run throughout the morning using a double elimination format meaning every surfer gets at least two surfs before being eliminated. The afternoon is for the semi finals culminating in the Grand final comprising the top six surfers.
There are also trophies for the top surfers in a variety of categories from Junior, local, women’s, masters, veterans and Legends.
The Presentation will be in the Lakeview Hotel followed by The Lounge Lizards.
It costs $60 for entry that covers all food and prizes and a T-shirt.
Entries will have to be in to the Lakeview Hotel on the Friday 22nd May by 7pm and the draw will be placed by 7:30pm.
Entry forms are available at Merimbula Surf Shop and Core Boarding Pambula or call John Smythe on 02 64956617

Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beach Challenge 2010
Sapphire Coast beaches were big winners in the South Coast Regional Awards of the Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beach Challenge 2010.
Carol Carmody, President of the Bermagui Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Inc attended the Award Ceremony held in the Booderee National Park at Jervis Bay on Thursday 5th November 2009. Such a beautiful serene paradise, certainly worthy of a special trip to see when visiting Jervis Bay. Although aware that Bermagui was a finalist I was pleasantly surprised to find that Horseshoe Bay Beach in Bermagui was an outright winner in the category of ‘Community Partnership & Action Award' with Aslings Beach Eden receiving a Highly Commended Certificate. Winning category for Merimbula Beach was the ‘Alcoa Litter Prevention Award' , with a Highly Commended in the WSN Resource Recovery Award category and Department of Environment & Climate Change Overall Beach Award catagory. "A total of 5 splendid reminders of how lucky we are to be surrounded by such beautiful assets". Being rewarded for looking after our beaches was even more satisfying. Congratulations and good luck goes with Bermagui & Merimbula now eligible to enter into the State Awards.
